Moment before the tragic jump that claimed the life of Maria
A 21-year-old woman, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, lost her life after she was allegedly pushed from a bridge during a bungee-jumping event without being connected to a safety rope, resulting in a fatal 40-metre fall into a ravine in Brazil.
The victim fell more than 130 feet from Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, Sao Paulo State.
Videos recorded from different angles showed two workers carrying the young woman toward the edge of the bridge before pushing her off. The footage suggested that none of the staff noticed that the safety rope had not been connected to her body before the jump.
Moments before the fatal incident, Maria Eduarda shared photos on social media showing her jump wristbands and the bridge.
Underneath one poignant photograph, she wrote on her Instagram: “Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge?”
Another video from the scene showed staff escorting her to the jumping point before releasing her into the ravine below.
Seconds after she fell, witnesses were heard shouting in alarm, “the rope, people, the rope.”
Emergency responders were called to the scene, but the woman was confirmed dead.
Authorities later recovered her body and transferred it to the Legal Medical Institute as part of ongoing investigations.
The Civil Police said an investigation had been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether criminal charges would be filed. Six people were arrested at the scene. (Daily Mail)
