The Senate has urged state governments across the country to stop negotiations and peace accords with terrorists and armed bandits, warning that such arrangements often fail to yield lasting results and may inadvertently finance further criminal activities.

The Senate also directed the Nigeria Police Force and the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre to track and apprehend armed bandits who openly use social media platforms, particularly TikTok, to engage members of the public while displaying large sums of money believed to be proceeds of criminal activities.

The resolutions followed a motion sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi, who raised concerns over renewed terrorist attacks in communities within Kogi West Senatorial District.

Presenting the motion, Senator Karimi drew attention to a recent attack on Iluke-Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, where terrorists reportedly invaded a secondary school and attempted to abduct students sitting for the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

According to the Kogi lawmaker, the attack resulted in the deaths of the school’s vice principal, a teacher and another community member.

He further noted that the incident occurred barely a day after a similar attack on a private residence in Odo-Ere, Yagba West Local Government Area, of the state on June 8, 2026.

Lawmakers further invited the Commander of the National Centre for Control of Arms and Small Weapons (NCSALW) to explain the incidents and challenges of arms proliferation in Nigeria. (Channels TV)
