The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) Alumni Association, under the leadership of Prof. Laz Uzoechi, has conferred an Award of Honour on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Nnenna N. Oti, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the growth and development of the University and society. The award also celebrates her as the most Alumni-Friendly Vice-Chancellor in the history of FUTO.
The prestigious award was presented during the Alumni Nite/Chancellor's Cocktail held at Glo-Ran Hotel and Suites, Owerri, on June 4, 2026, as part of activities marking the University's 38th Convocation Ceremony.
Presenting the award, Prof. Laz Uzoechi commended Prof. Oti for her exemplary leadership, unwavering commitment to academic excellence, and remarkable support for the advancement of FUTO and its alumni community. He observed that the relationship between the Alumni Association and the University Management had flourished under her administration, creating an atmosphere of mutual trust, collaboration, and progress.
According to Prof. Uzoechi, "Prof. Oti's administration has opened a new chapter in alumni-university relations. For the first time in many years, the Alumni Association has enjoyed a seamless and productive partnership with the University Management. Her inclusive leadership style and commitment to institutional development have earned her a special place in the hearts of FUTO alumni worldwide."
He further noted that the honour reflected the Association's deep appreciation for her impactful service, visionary leadership, and steadfast dedication to the ideals and aspirations of the University.
Responding to the honour, Prof. Oti expressed profound gratitude to the FUTO Alumni Association, describing the award as both humbling and inspiring. She acknowledged the immense support her administration had received from the alumni community, which contributed significantly to several landmark projects within the University.
She highlighted notable interventions attracted through alumni engagement, including the remodelling and reconstruction of the University's main gate, the establishment of a 10.5MW solar power farm, and the provision of a 132/33kV, 65MVA mobile transmission substation, among other developmental projects.
"This recognition belongs not only to me but to every member of the FUTO community who has contributed to our collective success," Prof. Oti remarked. "Our achievements over the years have been driven by collaboration, and the Alumni Association has remained one of our strongest partners in transforming FUTO into a globally competitive institution. Together, we have demonstrated what can be achieved when stakeholders unite behind a common vision."
The Vice-Chancellor further emphasized the strides made in improving service delivery within the University, citing the remarkable reduction in transcript processing time.
"What once took an unreasonably long period to accomplish can now be completed in about one week. This is a reflection of our commitment to efficiency, innovation, and excellence in service delivery," she added.
The Alumni Nite/Chancellor's Cocktail brought together distinguished alumni, university administrators, staff, students, and other stakeholders in a memorable celebration of achievement, service, and the enduring spirit of the FUTO family. The event served as a fitting tribute to excellence in leadership and reinforced the strong bond between the University and its global alumni network.
