Niger deploys joint security forces to flush out bandits in Borgu
The Niger State Government has intensified security operations in Borgu Local Government Area and surrounding communities with the deployment of joint security forces to tackle armed banditry and other criminal activities in the area.
The Commissioner for Homeland Security, Maurice Magaji, disclosed this in Minna, assuring residents that the government remained committed to protecting lives and property across the state.
Magaji said the deployment formed part of proactive measures taken by the government to address recurring attacks on communities by armed men suspected to be bandits.
According to him, security operatives have been stationed around the Kainji Lake National Park, which has been identified as a major route used by criminal elements operating in Borgu and neighbouring communities.
He said reports from the area indicated that the operation was yielding positive results, with security forces successfully dislodging bandits from some of their hideouts.
“We have taken proactive steps to ensure that Borgu and other security-challenged communities are adequately protected. Joint security forces have been deployed to the affected areas and the criminals are no longer finding it easy to operate there,” he said.
The commissioner attributed the successes recorded so far to the cooperation of community members and stakeholders who have continued to provide security agencies with credible and actionable intelligence.
He appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders and residents to sustain their support by promptly reporting suspicious movements and unfamiliar persons within their communities.
Magaji assured that the state government would continue to provide logistical support to security agencies to enhance their operations and improve the safety of residents.
Commenting on reports that some villagers allegedly provided money to bandits for the purchase of food, the commissioner said the development was an indication that ongoing security operations were putting pressure on the criminal groups and restricting their activities.
He reiterated the government’s determination to deploy all available security measures to eliminate banditry in the state, expressing optimism that continued collaboration between residents and security agencies would help restore lasting peace, particularly in farming communities> (The Nation)
