The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly picked Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as running mate to its governorship candidate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State.
The decision reportedly puts to rest speculation surrounding the choice of deputy governorship candidate which signals a strategic political alignment ahead of the 2027 elections in Lagos State.
Sonayon-James, who hails from Badagry is expected to be the running mate to Dr Obafemi Hamzat.
The reported choice of the Badagry-born politician has generated excitement across political circles, particularly within the Badagry Division, where she is regarded as a grassroots mobiliser with deep community ties.
Although the party is yet to make a formal announcement, insiders disclosed that the official unveiling of the Hamzat-Sonayon-James is expected in the coming days.
According to party sources, Sonayon-James’ nomination was backed by President Bola Tinubu and the Governance Advisory Committee (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the APC in Lagos State.
Sonayon-James currently serves as the Assistant State Woman Leader of the APC in Lagos State and has built a reputation for grassroots engagement, political mobilisation and advocacy for inclusive development.
The name “Sonayon,” derived from the Ègùn language spoken in Badagry and neighbouring communities, translates as “Tomorrow is Bright” or “Better Days Ahead.”
Beyond politics, she is recognised as an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) expert and Sustainability Risk Consultant, with experience in public policy, governance and community development initiatives.
A member of the royal family of Kweme Kingdom in Badagry West Local Council Development Area, Sonayon-James enjoys strong connections with traditional institutions and community leaders across the division.
She is the grand-daughter of the late Oba Afolabi Ogungbe James and comes from a lineage with a longstanding history of political participation and public service.
Her public service record includes serving as Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West LCDA, where she participated in the implementation of several social intervention and community development programmes.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Human Resources Management from the University of Hull, United Kingdom, and a Master of Science degree in Social Work (Community Development) from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).
She has built a dynamic career in human resources, logistics, and sustainability, operating as CEO of DGS Chauffeurs & Logistics.
Her emerge’ce has been welcomed by party members and stakeholders, particularly in Badagry Division, who view her nomination as a step towards strengthening representation for the coastal axis of Lagos State.
Reacting, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Samuel Ajose, said: “This is a proud moment for Badagry and a well-deserved recognition of your dedication, service, and commitment to our great party.
“For those of us who have consistently advocated for greater inclusion and representation for Badagry, this milestone is both meaningful and encouraging.
“My advocacy was never about personal ambition, but about ensuring that our people have a voice and a place at the table. I celebrate this achievement with you and wish you wisdom, strength, and success in the journey ahead.”
Also, House of Representatives member, representing Badagry Constituency, Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan said: “I heartily congratulate Mrs. Damilola Sonayon James on her well-deserved emergence as the Deputy Governorship Candidate of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the 2027 Lagos State Governorship Election.
