The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Edo State axis, has condemned the alleged tear-gassing of schoolchildren and students during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the NANS Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Chairman in Edo State, Comrade Yakubu Peter Odion, the student body described the incident as “unprovoked and inhumane”, alleging that the action was carried out by the Nigerian Police at the instance of the Edo State Government and organisers of the event.
According to NANS, the celebration, which was meant to honour and celebrate children, turned into what it described as “Children Tear-Gassing Day 2026 in Edo,” adding that the date would remain unforgettable in the minds of Nigerian students.
The association expressed concern over what it termed increasing harassment and intimidation of students allegedly under the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
“Nigerian students under the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo have suffered harassment and intimidation like never before in the history of democracy in Edo,” the statement read.
NANS also referenced a previous incident involving students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, who were allegedly arrested and detained for protesting insecurity in the university community.
The student body questioned the explanation earlier provided by the Edo State Government through a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary, which reportedly attributed the release of tear gas to an “overzealous bouncer."
NANS queried how a private bouncer could have access to tear gas and allegedly deploy it at an event involving minors and students.
“Is Edo State Government now openly acknowledging the fact that a private bouncer now has the privilege of arming himself or herself with tear gas to the point of boldly releasing it at an event involving minors?” Odion stated.
The student body demanded an urgent investigation into the incident and called for the public prosecution of all individuals responsible for the alleged act.
NANS also demanded that the Edo State Government take full responsibility for the medical bills of affected victims and provide compensation to the affected children and their families for the trauma and pain caused by the incident.
The association further called on the organisers of the Children’s Day event held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on May 27, 2026, to tender a public apology.
The incident has continued to generate reactions from concerned citizens and stakeholders, with calls for accountability and improved safety measures during public events involving children. (Nigerian Tribune)
