Unknown gunmen have shot dead a police constable in Kaduna, North-West Nigeria. News Express learnt that the incident occurred around 8pm on Sunday (Oct. 6) along Nnamdi Azikwe Way By-Pass around Ungwan Muazu in the state capital, Kaduna.
News Express learnt that the policeman whose name was given as Constable Garba Sani was trekking to his duty post at Tudun Wada Police Station when three gunmen on a motor bike accosted him and shot him.
“He was coming from his residence in Nasarawa when they ambushed and shot him to death and fled towards Kudandan/Nasarawa area,” a source said.
Eyewitnesses say the gunmen shot sporadically in the air to scare away people and then shot the policeman and fled.
“We abandoned our shops and scampered for safety when we heard the shootings. After which we came back to find a policeman killed in his own pool of blood,” Haruna Kwangila told our reporter.
“The entire busy dual Nnamdi Azikwe By-Pass was completely deserted with shops and residences remaining indoors throughout the night,” he added.
Normalcy had returned to the area by yesterday morning with business activities gradually picking up when our reporter visited the scene in the afternoon.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Aminu Lawal did not respond to text message sent to his phone. A senior police source, however, confirmed the incident.
