Tinubu, Ogbeni (Aregbesola), Fayemi and APC guilty of impunity

Where is my brother, Semiu Okanlawon, to answer some tough questions when you need him? Semiu, Ogbeni n fumble o. Not long ago, I saw pictures of him (and, later Fayemi, and some Senators) in London where they had gone to greet Asiwaju’s knees.

Although I found it odd that political office holders, who claim not to be cut from the same philosophical stone as the PDP, and must therefore convince Nigerians that their style and substance are different, could abandon their duty posts and travel on the people’s dime to London, I did not write about it at the time, having decided to address the impunity of these APC Governors in a public lecture I’ll be giving in Nigeria in November.

However, the pictures of Asiwaju’s triumphal entry released moments ago by Kayode Ogundamisi make silence until November dangerous. I see Ogbeni and Kayode Fayemi stepping out of the plane after Asiwaju’s exit. Where did they join the flight? Semiu, don’t tell me that your Oga and his counterpart in Ekiti flew again to London on the people’s time and dime to escort their Oga back home o. Abeg, clarify that point kia kia. I hope they joined the flight after it landed and re-emerged with Oga? Even if the flight back home was on one of their Oga’s private jets, it’s still the people’s time.

Is there any hospital in Lagos, Osogbo, Ado Ekiti, Ibadan, and Abeokuta with the expertise and equipment for knee surgeries? Or at least post-knee surgery care? Even the post-surgical care had to be in London.

A few years ago, Atiku Abubakar tripped on his treadmill, hurt his knee, and went to London and America (thankfully the FBI has now shut him out of America) to treat his knees. You’d think a party which boasts a different philosophy would understand the symbolism of sending a different message about the knees of its own big men. This is what Atiku and the PDP did about their knees o; this is what we are doing differently about our own knees o. What does this London knee surgery fanfare – and the attendant pilgrimages to London by APC stalwarts (apologies to Premium Times) – say about this political party at the level of style and substance? Did the APC pay for any of these trips to see a private citizen by state governors and senators? If this is not the case, why should the people have to pay? What is the APC’s understanding of impunity?

If they don’t answer these questions satisfactorily, when next an APC noisemaker complains about government and PDP impunity near you, tarry not, leave their company and shake off the dust of thine feet in testimony against them. Similarly, if any of them shall come to thee and say: “it is Asiwaju’s bloody business where he treats his knees as a private citizen”, hold their hands and explain to them like they are kindergartners that the moment government officials (governors, reps, senators) began to troop to London on the people’s dime and time, it ceased to be Asiwaju’s bloody business.

Professor Adesanmi, who published this yesterday on his Facebook wall (but without the headline), writes from Accra, Ghana. Semiu Okanlawon is Director at Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Office of the Governor, Osun State. Photo shows Tinubu on his return, yesterday, from foreign medical treatment.
