Edo State Gov Monday Okpebholo
Edo State Government has begun moves to settle the rift between Ossiomo Power and its Chinese partner, Jiangsu Communication Clean Energy Technology Co. Ltd (CCETC).
Ossiomo Power used to provide 24 hours electricity to its customers in Benin City and its environs from its power plant in Ologbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government.
It does not currently generate electricity due to disagreement with CCETC after shutdown of its power plant.
Commissioner for Power, Paul Usenbo, said government’s move to resolve the conflict was part of a broader plan to ensure residents enjoyed adequate power supply.
He spoke in Benin City at a stakeholders’ meeting on power supply improvement.
Usenbo said government was looking at setting up a committee to resolve the impasse between Ossiomo and its Chinese partners.
He added: “Edo is looking at how to strengthen power generation, improve transmission and stabilise distribution. Resolutions at the engagement meeting will be put into actions.”
On the Ossiomo Power issue, he said: “Yes, this is being looked into. There is solution on the way
“The ministry has signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with companies for the generation of up to 1,000 megawatts of electricity. It is also in the final stages of concluding an agreement with a foreign company for the development of 100MW solar farms.
“We have partnered Federal Government to enhance power generation and distribution through Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) facility at Ihovbor.
“Overall, these initiatives reflect the ministry’s commitment to ensuring provision of stable, reliable and affordable electricity for the people of Edo State, while also supporting economic growth and industrial development.” (The Nation)
