Wisdom Gate International School
The management of Wisdom Gate International School, Eligbolo in Port Harcourt, has appealed to the Rivers State government to reconsider the suspension placed on the institution following the tragic death of a two-year-old pupil.
The school was shut down after the incident in which little Wynnie Akakue reportedly died from injuries sustained when a bookshelf fell on her while she was asleep in class. The tragedy, which occurred on March 17, sparked public outrage and demands for accountability from the school.
Following the incident, the parents of the deceased child, Dr Iasuaka Akakue and Mrs Chinyere Akakue, accused the school of negligence and attempted cover-up, insisting on justice for their daughter.
In response, the state government ordered the immediate suspension of academic activities at the school pending full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor, maintained that the school would remain closed until all issues connected to the incident are properly resolved.
However, speaking to journalists, the proprietress of the school, Toyon Obikoya, appealed for understanding, describing the closure as emotionally and economically difficult for both staff and parents. She said the institution has been cooperating with authorities and has also made efforts to reach the bereaved family through appropriate channels.
Obikoya explained that the school engaged community and religious leaders in attempts to express sympathy and open dialogue with the family, stressing that the institution has no intention of obstructing investigations and is already facing legal proceedings.
Some parents of pupils also expressed concern over the prolonged closure, noting that it has disrupted academic activities and placed financial and emotional strain on families. While sympathising with the grieving parents, they urged the government to consider the wider impact on other children and teachers affected by the shutdown.
One parent described the situation as deeply painful on all sides, saying families are struggling to cope with school disruptions, rising costs, and emotional distress.
Despite the appeal, stakeholders maintain that the tragedy has raised serious questions about safety standards in private schools, even as calls grow for a balanced resolution that addresses justice, accountability, and the future of affected pupils. (The Guardian)
