The President of the United Church of Christ in Nigeria (HEKAN), Rev. Dr. Amos G. Kiri, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently address the worsening insecurity and hunger across the country.

Kiri made the appeal during his valedictory address at the Church’s 60th Annual National Convention held in Kaduna, where he warned that persistent violence and food shortages were placing severe strain on communities and congregations.

Lamenting the continued killings of church members in different parts of the country, the HEKAN President advocated proactive, intelligence-driven operations to better protect lives and property.

He also drew attention to the growing food crisis, urging the Federal Government to prioritise agricultural support and provide subsidies to farmers in order to boost food production and ease hardship among citizens.

The cleric, who is set to step down later this year after nearly a decade in office, described the situation as both a national and moral challenge requiring immediate and decisive action.

Speaking at the Diamond Jubilee convention themed “We are One in Christ,” Kiri emphasised unity among Christians, noting that cohesion is critical in navigating the country’s current challenges.

While reflecting on his tenure, he highlighted reforms in theological education, administrative digitisation, and infrastructural development within the Church, alongside expanded access to healthcare and education in several states.

He paid tribute to members of the Church who lost their lives in recent attacks, offering condolences to their families and affirming that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.

Kiri also encouraged Christians to actively participate in the democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections by obtaining voter cards and engaging in leadership at all levels.

He further thanked the Church’s leadership and members for their support, urging continued unity and commitment as a new administration takes over the affairs of the denomination.
