A 23-year-old man has allegedly severed the head of a six-year-old girl, Mutiyatu Sunday, at Adigun Village in Olorunda Ogunsola area of Ibadan.

The Police Command’s Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Sunday.

Olayinka said that the tragic incident happened on Saturday.

He said that the Command received information that a young girl had been unlawfully killed, with her severed head found in possession of the suspect at Adigun Village in Olorunda Ogunsola area of Ibadan.

He said that the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abimbola Olugbenga, upon receiving the information promptly mobilised operatives to the scene to rescue the suspect from a mob and secure the severed head.

“The police operatives in compliance with this directive, swiftly mobilised to the scene and, in spite of stiff resistance from an irate mob, successfully rescued and arrested the suspect and secured the exhibit found in his possession.

“Following the arrest, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, aged 23, allegedly unlawfully killed a six-year-old girl, later identified as Mutiyatu Sunday, and severed her head, which was recovered from him,” the PRO said.

Olayinka said that the suspect, after interrogation, had been conveyed to a medical facility for necessary treatment due to injuries sustained from the mob attack.

He said that the suspect would later be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for discreet investigation and prosecution.

Olayinka said that CP Olugbenga warned residents in the state against acts of jungle justice.

Olugbenga said that such unlawful actions impede thorough investigation and ultimately truncate the course of justice.

The CP reassured members of the public that justice would be served in the matter and urged residents to remain law-abiding and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation. (NAN)
