The Ejiwa Elegba Iru Festival began on Friday with the inauguration of the rebuilt Agbo Elegba Ejiwa shrine in Iru, Lagos State.
The Oniru of Iru, Oba Omogbolahan Lawal, led the ceremony attended by other traditional rulers, government officials, cultural custodians and community leaders.
Dignitaries and residents gathered at the historic site, marking a significant moment in the preservation of Iru’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
Lawal said, “The reconstruction of the Agbo Elegba symbolises our commitment to preserving cultural heritage while embracing modern development.”
He described the shrine as “a sacred structure representing protection, guidance and the spiritual gateway of the community.”
According to him, its renewal reflects the reverence of the Iru people for their traditions and their role in promoting unity and prosperity.
The traditional ruler noted that the project was achieved through collective efforts, reflecting strong community participation and support for cultural continuity.
He said the festival would feature traditional rites, cultural displays, music performances and community engagements over several days.
He urged residents and visitors to “uphold peace, respect and collective pride” throughout the celebrations.
Lawal emphasised the importance of cultural festivals in strengthening identity, fostering unity and promoting tourism within the community.
He also invited investors to explore opportunities through the #LeGIT initiative, aimed at promoting cultural heritage and sustainable development in Iru.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the festival attracts indigenes, residents and tourists celebrating the cultural identity of the Iru people.
Traders and local businesses are expected to benefit from increased economic activities generated during the festivities.
The event also featured colourful dances, masquerade displays and performances by various groups and different age grades.
Security personnel were deployed to ensure order, as organisers reiterated their commitment to a peaceful and successful celebration. (NAN)
