In a society where orphans and abandoned children are often neglected, Mama Janet Ekundayo stood out as a rare symbol of compassion, devoting her life to caring for the most vulnerable.

For more than five decades, she ran the Ekundayo Orphanage Home in Isanlu Makutu, Kogi State, providing shelter, love, and hope to hundreds of children who had nowhere else to turn.

True to the meaning of her name, “tears turned to joy”, Mama Ekundayo transformed the lives of countless children, turning their pain into purpose and happiness.

By 2008, she had cared for over 500 children, a remarkable feat that earned her the nickname “Olomo Yeye,” a Yoruba phrase meaning “mother of many.”

Despite having five biological children of her own, her passion for nurturing young lives drove her to open her home and heart to many more, leaving behind a legacy of sacrifice, faith, and unconditional love.

In Yoruba, “Ekundayo” translates as “my tears have turned to joy,” reflecting the happiness she brought to countless children.

By 2007, she had adopted her 469th child, and by 2008, she had cared for over 500 children.

Despite having her own family, her love for children extended to hundreds more, showing her selfless dedication.

This Yoruba title means “someone with many children,” a fitting recognition of her life’s work.

Mama Ekundayo often said, “Emi ko, ishe Oluwa ni; Agbara mi ko, agbara Olorun ni”—“It is not by my effort or might, but by the grace and power of God.”

She once said, “My joy overflows, my whole life has been filled with joy… These children give me the greatest joy.”

Singer and photographer TY Bello created a tribute song titled Ekundayo ft Olufunmi in her honor in 2008, celebrating her dedication.

Before her death in 2009, she prayed for someone to continue her work. Her daughter, Grace, has since taken over the orphanage, carrying forward her mission.
