Protests erupted during the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) elections in Zamfara State after the IPAC National Election Committee delisted several major political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and Young Progressives Party (YPP), moments before voting began.
The sudden delisting sparked protests and a walkout by aggrieved party members, who accused the national body of bias and lack of transparency.
Initially, the election began under calm conditions as members gathered for the leadership transition, but tensions escalated rapidly after news of the exclusions spread.
Efforts by the National Committee to resume the screening process were met with renewed resistance from delegates, prompting the National Committee Chairman, Umar Mohammed, to suspend the elections indefinitely.
The postponement is a setback for the council, whose elections were already five months overdue, leaving the state’s inter-party relations and leadership structure in uncertainty. (The Sun)
