The Ghanaian flag and the Minister of foreign affairs, Samuel Okudzeto
The Government of Ghana has clarified its visa-free policy for African nationals, explaining that the initiative does not guarantee automatic entry into the country.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, explained that while the policy removes the requirement for visas, it does not take away the authority of immigration officers to determine admissibility upon arrival.
According to the Ghanaian authorities, travellers will still be subject to immigration checks at the borders.
He noted that all travellers must comply with existing entry conditions, including holding valid travel documents and satisfying border officials on the purpose of their visit.
Ablakwa stated that the clarification became necessary following public misconceptions that the policy meant unrestricted access into Ghana.
According to him, Ghana has not opened its borders without control, stressing that immigration officers retain the right to refuse entry to individuals who do not meet the stipulated requirements.
He added that the visa-free initiative is designed to facilitate movement across the continent, while ensuring that national security and immigration regulations are upheld. (Nigerian Tribune)
