The federal government has approved the construction of Phase 2 of the Bodo–Bonny Road, just as it commissioned and declared open the completed Phase 1 of the road, whose construction began 38 years ago.

Declaring the road open today, the Minister of Works, Engineer David Umahi, said work would begin on Phase 2 immediately.

Umahi, who was represented by the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, said the legacy project, which began during the Sani Abacha regime and continued through several administrations, was completed by the Tinubu administration.

However, the project, which was almost abandoned, was reinitiated by the Buhari administration.

“We also acknowledge the foresight of Babatunde Raji Fashola, who initiated this project under President Muhammadu Buhari, laying the foundation for continuity.

This road is more than a physical link; it is a bridge to opportunity, a lifeline for commerce, and a symbol of national cohesion. It connects coastal communities to the mainland, reduces insecurity, and opens doors for prosperity across the Niger Delta.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this administration remains steadfast in its determination to strengthen national connectivity through quality road infrastructure. This achievement inspired us to build faster, deliver better, and extend promise of connectivity to every corner of our nation.”

Chairman, Award Ceremony Sub-Committee for the Bodo–Bonny Road, Chief Jasper Jombo, said that for decades, the Bodo–Bonny corridor symbolised both economic potential and infrastructural limitation, as Bonny Island—a globally significant hub for oil and gas activities—remained physically disconnected from the Nigerian mainland, relying heavily on water transportation.

“This disconnect posed challenges not only to commerce and industry but also to the daily lives, safety and aspirations of our people.

“Today, we are overjoyed that such a cloud of witnesses are gathered, not only to celebrate the project itself but to honour the visionary leaders, committed stakeholders and unsung heroes whose collective efforts have made this dream a reality,” he said.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards of excellence to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Works Dave Umahi, and Minister of State for Works Bello Goronyo. (The Sun)
