Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has accused Governor Seyi Makinde of abandoning governance in favour of political pursuits, warning of what it described as dire consequences for residents of the state.
The opposition party in a statement issued in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, alleged that the governor has shifted focus from addressing critical issues affecting the state to pursuing personal political ambitions, particularly within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The APC claimed that Makinde’s preoccupation with internal party struggles and national political positioning has come at the expense of effective governance, accusing him of neglecting pressing challenges such as insecurity, poor waste management and recurring road accidents across the state.
According to the party, expectations were high following the governor’s re-election for a second term, with many anticipating a renewed focus on delivering dividends of democracy. However, it alleged that the administration has instead devoted significant time and resources to what it described as a bid to “take full control” of the PDP amid its internal crisis.
“It is delusional for Governor Makinde to believe that his political fortune can extend beyond his tenure in office if governance continues to suffer,” the PDP said, adding that the current state of the PDP was partly the result of actions by key figures within the party, including the governor.
The APC further criticised the governor’s handling of recent events, referencing a road accident in Ibadan which reportedly claimed several lives. It alleged that while residents were grieving, the governor was engaged in political meetings and activities related to future elections.
The opposition party also faulted what it described as “reckless spending,” including the procurement of new vehicles for council officials, arguing that such actions reflect misplaced priorities amid economic challenges.
Additionally, the APC expressed concern over the state of public infrastructure, claiming that hospitals, schools, and other institutions have been left to deteriorate, while security concerns continue to mount.
The party maintained that the administration has failed to take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of global economic pressures, including the effects of the Middle East crisis, on the local economy. (The Sun)
