Indigenes of Omungo community in the Ifelodun local government area of Kwara State, under the aegis of the Omungo Development Union (ODU), have called on both the federal and state governments and security agencies in the state to intensify efforts toward the safe and unconditional release of some abducted worshippers in the area.
Recall that eight church worshipers were abducted by gunmen on Sunday during church service in the rural community, while the abductors have reportedly demanded N1billion ransom on the kidnap victims, among others.
In a statement by the President and secretary of the union, Sir Prince Oladimeji Ladi Thompson and Felix Oloyede Afariogun, respectively, the people assured that efforts are ongoing in collaboration with security agencies and relevant authorities to secure the release of the kidnap victims.
The people, who urged security agencies to strengthen surveillance and protection within Omungo and surrounding communities to prevent any recurrence of such incidents, said that safety of lives and property must be treated as a matter of utmost priority.
“We call for the immediate deployment of adequate security resources and intelligence to rescue the victims and ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.
The community leaders, who sympathized with families of the victims, said that the Omungo community stands with them and remain hopeful and prayerful for safe return of the people.
“The Union further calls on all residents of Omungo to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding. We understand the fear and anxiety this incident has caused; however, we strongly advise against any form of panic or unlawful actions.
“Be assured that efforts are ongoing in collaboration with security agencies and relevant authorities to secure the release of our people.
“We encourage members of the community to stay vigilant, cooperate with security operatives, and promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
“Omungo remains a community founded on peace, unity, and mutual respect, and we must continue to uphold these values even in the face of adversity.
“The Omungo Development Union will continue to engage with all stakeholders and provide updates as the situation unfolds,” the statement said. (Tribune)
