Chinese Vice President Han Zheng arrived in Nairobi, where he was warmly welcomed by Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, against a backdrop of expanding infrastructure, trade, and strategic engagement across Africa.
The visit is part of a high-level 3‑nation tour that will extend to South Africa and Seychelles, following invitations from Deputy President Kithure Kindiki of Kenya, Deputy President Paul Mashatile of South Africa, and Vice President Sebastien Pillay of Seychelles.
While Beijing’s official statements were characteristically brief, observers note the tour is part of a broader strategy to consolidate relationships that have quietly become pivotal for regional development and geopolitics.
While Beijing’s official statements were characteristically brief, observers note the tour is part of a broader strategy to consolidate relationships that have quietly become pivotal for regional development and geopolitics.
In Kenya, the timing is particularly significant. Days before the visit, President William Ruto and Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni launched the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) toward the Ugandan border, a revival of a stalled Chinese-backed project after a six-year hiatus.
Stretching 107 kilometres from Kisumu to Malaba, the project not only enhances transport connectivity but also highlights the continuity of China’s influence in regional infrastructure.
Across the continent, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has expanded rapidly over the past decade. Chinese-backed projects - from ports and railways to energy and industrial parks, have transformed urban landscapes, especially in East and Southern Africa.
In Kenya, highways threading through Nairobi, coastal port expansions, and energy system upgrades underscore Beijing’s footprint. South Africa, as Africa’s largest economy, has seen significant Chinese investment in mining, technology, and renewable energy sectors, while Seychelles has leveraged Chinese support in port development and tourism infrastructure.
Analysts say the 3-nation tour signals more than diplomacy. It is Beijing cementing its role as a key development partner while subtly extending strategic influence across a geopolitically important region.
By linking economic investment with high-level engagement, China is reshaping Africa’s economic architecture, ensuring that the Belt and Road Initiative is not just about roads and rails, but about forging long-term geopolitical partnerships.
For African leaders, Chinese engagement offers both opportunity and leverage, as the continent balances traditional Western ties with Beijing’s growing footprint. (BIA)
