Aftermath of the attack
Pandemonium broke out in the Aso-Pada area of Mararaba, Nasarawa State, on Wednesday following an early morning invasion by armed bandits. The attackers targeted the Welder Junction area, located behind Aso Secondary School, leaving a trail of violence and displacement in their wake.
While the exact death toll remains unconfirmed, several residents were reportedly killed and many others sustained varying degrees of injury. Witnesses stated that the attackers used cutlasses and other dangerous weapons on the local population during the raid.
Security heightened as APC governors arrive for congress
The attack coincided with the All Progressives Congress (APC) North Central Zonal Congress, hosted by Abdullahi Sule, Nasarawa State Governor, in the state capital, Lafia. The proximity of the violence to the high-profile political gathering has raised significant security concerns across the region.
As the violence unfolded, a heavy security presence was observed in the area. Our correspondent reported seeing a convoy of over 20 vehicles escorting APC governors and other party stalwarts from the North Central zone through the state to Lafia.
Schools disrupted as families seek safety
The invasion sparked a frantic rush as parents and relatives moved to evacuate children from schools within the vicinity. Many students were seen stranded and in tears as they sought safety amidst the brewing chaos.
Efforts to obtain official comments from the police and community leaders were unsuccessful at the time of publication. WhatsApp messages sent to relevant authorities have not yet received a response. (BusinessDay, excluding headline)
