The Nigerian Navy has arrested two stowaways who attempted to travel illegally to Europe aboard a vessel at the Lagos Port.

The suspects were discovered hiding in the rudder compartment of MV Seaspan Lahore during a routine security check by naval personnel.

They were identified as Abdullahi Yakubu, 36, and Omoniyi Afotona, 25.

Both men have been handed over to the Lagos Ports and Marine Command, Apapa, for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore A. Adams-Aliyu, said the suspects were arrested in the early hours of Thursday, March 19, 2026, while the vessel was underway near the Lagos Fairway Buoy.

He explained that a stowaway is a person who secretly boards a vessel to travel illegally to another country without authorisation.

Adams-Aliyu warned that stowing away is both illegal and dangerous, urging parents and guardians to educate young people on the risks.

He advised Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad to pursue legal migration channels. (Daily Trust)
