Hon Chimezie Ikwunne
Stakeholders in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State have made a strong case for the House of Representatives’ seat, demanding that the LGA should be allowed to fill the legislative position in 2027.
The stakeholders argued that their brothers in Awka South LGA have, for a very long time, been occupying the Awka North/Awka South Federal Constituency seat, which ordinarily should be rotating between them.
Since 1999, Awka South has occupied the position for 24 years while Awka North has only been there for just four years; a situation that has been generating political tension in the federal constituency.
Reacting to the development, the member representing Awka North Constituency in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Chimezie Ikwunne, called for a dialogue between the leaders of the two LGAs over the matter.
“The people of Awka North and Awka South need to sit down and discuss how we are going to be sharing our House of Representatives seat. That would help to promote peace, unity, and harmony”, he stated.
“For equity, fairness, and justice, going to the Green Chamber will have to be rotational. This is because if we continue like this, we will always be given the shortest end of the stick.
“Awka South has not been fair to Awka North. But this time around, we will have to sit down and reach an agreement”, Ikwunne added.
Also speaking, Ikwunne’s predecessor in the state Assembly, John Nwokoye, appealed to the people of Awka South to support their brothers in Awka North to go to the Green Chambers for the sake of equity and justice.
“You people have been occupying that position for about 24 years now. A child born 24 years ago is already an adult today, and probably may have his or her own child by now. Some might have graduated from the university.
“We have capable hands in Awka North. Whatever you have in Awka South, we have them in Awka North. Equity and justice demand that the people of Awka North should be supported to go to the House of Representatives”, Nwokoye argued.
The former state lawmaker appealed to political parties in the state, particularly the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to give their tickets to aspirants from Awka North ahead of the 2027 polls. (The Sun)
