Igbo rulers at a gathering advocating peace and development
The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has called for greater collaboration among traditional rulers in the South East and South South regions, describing such inter-regional cooperation as a catalyst for sustainable peace and economic advancement.
In a statement signed by its Director-General, His Lordship Justice Alpha Ikpeama, and National Director of Media and Publicity, Prof. Obasi Igwe, UNIEC commended Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for advocating unity and strategic collaboration among traditional institutions across the two regions.
“The unity, strategic collaboration, and collective responsibility among traditional rulers across the South East and South-South geopolitical regions will ensure justice, equity, and inclusive governance,” the statement read.
UNIEC highlighted the stabilizing role of traditional institutions in promoting peace, cultural continuity, and grassroots development, noting that inter-regional cooperation could help address contemporary security challenges and accelerate people-centered development.
The council also praised the leadership of revered traditional figures such as Nnaemeka Achebe, Obi of Onitsha, emphasizing the importance of integrating monarchs into peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and development planning processes.
“UNIEC strongly endorses Governor Otti’s call for unity and structured collaboration among traditional rulers. We advocate deeper integration of traditional institutions into governance and development planning,” the statement added.
The elders urged political leaders, traditional rulers, civil society actors, and the private sector to embrace unity as a cornerstone for regional transformation, stressing that respect for indigenous institutions and adherence to justice and fairness are essential for enduring peace, security, and development.
