The former president of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Daniel Igali, has reiterated the state`s readiness to host the upcoming Gov. Douye Diri National Wrestling Classics in Yenagoa, Bayelsa.
Igali told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that the state is set to provide a befitting competition for the 30 participating states and 10 clubs.
NAN reports that the championship, originally scheduled for Dec. 10 to Dec. 20, 2025, was rescheduled to March 25 to April 1.
According to the Commissioner for Sports Development in the state, the championship will be one of the most competitive and best-organised national wrestling championships in recent times.
“With the new dates now confirmed, all arrangements have been concluded for a successful championship.
“The State Government, through the Ministry of Sports Development, in collaboration with the NWF led by the new President, Adewale Adeniyi, has put in place all necessary modalities for a world-class event.
“The strong support of sponsors and partners has further enhanced this edition, positioning it as the best so far,” he said.
He said all states, military and paramilitary institutions, and wrestling clubs are encouraged to submit their full contingent lists promptly.
“A fully prepared Games Village will accommodate all participating teams, with comprehensive feeding arrangements in place to guarantee athlete welfare and optimal performance conditions,” he said.
“The championship will serve as a selection platform for Nigeria’s representatives to the African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt, scheduled for late April to early May.
“The National Wrestling Classics remains one of the longest-running and most respected national championships in Nigeria, playing a vital role in talent discovery and elite athlete development,” he said.
Igali said wrestling enthusiasts and stakeholders are invited to Yenagoa for a week of top-level action as Bayelsa hosts the nation in what promises to be a memorable celebration of wrestling excellence. (NAN)
