Renowned Nuclear Physicist, Felix Oragwu
By ALEX ENEBELI
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has congratulated renowned nuclear physicist, Felix Oragwu, as he marks his 92nd birthday.
In a birthday message issued on Monday in Enugu by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Ezechi Chukwu, the organisation described Oragwu’s life as a “remarkable testament to intellectual excellence, patriotism, and resilience”.
The group noted that during the Nigerian civil war, he played a historic role as Head of Research Planning and Coordinator of Technological Services for the Science and Technology Group in Biafra.
They said that in the face of extreme scarcity, Oragwu and his team demonstrated extraordinary ingenuity by converting palm oil into aviation fuel capable of powering aircraft.
According to the statement, the scholar contributed to the development of artillery weapon used during the Biafra War known as “Ogbunigwe”, feats described as enduring symbols of innovation driven by necessity and courage.
The statement said Oragwu attended Christ the King College (CKC), Onitsha, before advancing his studies at the Universities of Glasgow, Toronto, and Manchester.
It added that Oragwu distinguished himself early in academia as a lecturer in physics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), prior to the Nigerian Civil War.
“Ohanaeze recognises that beyond the war, Professor Oragwu’s vision for scientific and industrial advancement reflected a deep commitment to national development, even in the face of setbacks,” the statement added.
Quoting the President-General of the organisation, Azuta Mbata, the statement said: “Professor Felix Oragwu represents the classic Igbo brilliance, resilience and inventive spirit.
“His contributions to science and history will remain a source of pride and inspiration for generations to come.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide celebrates the iconic figure and prayed for his continued good health, peace, and longevity as he continues to inspire humanity with his legacy,” Mbata said. (NAN)
