Manchester United have dismissed claims the club could reverse its decision to release veteran Brazilian midfielder Casemiro at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old announced in January that he would leave when his £350,000-a-week contract expires, bringing an end to his spell at Old Trafford.

Despite strong performances this season, Man United have decided not to offer a new deal to the former Real Madrid midfielder, who will become available on a free transfer.

United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe previously questioned Casemiro’s £18.2 million annual salary and has pledged to reduce the club’s wage bill as part of a broader cost-cutting strategy.

The decision not to trigger an extension on Casemiro’s contract was therefore taken early as United push ahead with a long-term squad rebuild. The midfielder also requested that the news be made public to avoid uncertainty toward the end of the campaign.

Casemiro has produced a string of impressive displays. He opened the scoring in United’s 3–1 win over Aston Villa F.C. on Sunday, taking his tally to seven goals this season, six of them headers.

The Brazilian celebrated in front of the Stretford End by repeatedly pointing to the club badge, prompting fans to chant, “One more year, Casemiro.”

After the match, United captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Leny Yoro both expressed hope that the midfielder would remain at the club.

However, sources say Manchester United have no plans to reconsider their stance.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick also indicated there would be no change of course regarding Casemiro’s future.

“When something is decided, it makes it a little bit easier, and everyone understands the situation,” Carrick said. (BusinessDay)
