President Tinubu
The Presidency has removed the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) from the purview of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and would now be under its direct supervision.
The approval was made my President Bola Tinubu on March 5, 2026,and was transmitted to the Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo for immediate implementation on 11 March 2026. The Attorney General of the Federation was directed to amend the NSIB Establishment Act 2022 to reflect the change and forward the required amendments to the National Assembly.
The NSIB was established through Act No. 35 of 2022, replacing the former Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), which had operated solely within the aviation sector and its jurisdiction now covers accident investigation in the air, marine, rail, and tracked vehicle systems. It is Nigeria’s only multimodal accident investigation authority.
With the movement of the NSIB to the direct supervision of the Presidency, the Aviation Ministry now has five agencies left under its purview. They are; the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).
