Suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group have attacked a police station in Illo town, Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, setting the facility ablaze and making away with several cartons of ammunition.
Local sources said the gunmen stormed the station late Sunday night, firing multiple gunshots that sent panic through the community before setting the building on fire.
During the raid, the attackers reportedly carted away about seven cartons of ammunition from the station’s armoury. A police officer who was on duty at the time of the incident was also said to have been abducted by the assailants.
Confirming the attack, Bashar Usman, Police Public Relations Officer of the Kebbi State Command, confided via telephone that the command received reports of the incident and had launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding it.
He noted that security operatives were currently gathering intelligence and taking steps to restore calm while strengthening security in the area.
Usman also urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could help identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Illo town, located near the Nigeria–Niger border, has in recent months faced rising security concerns, prompting authorities to intensify efforts to curb cross-border criminal activities in the region. (Business Day)
