Thousands of passengers are stranded across the US as Delta, American Airlines, United, PSA Airlines, SkyWest, and other carriers face significant disruptions today. Over 600 cancellations and more than 4,000 delays have left many travelers stuck at airports in major cities like Atlanta, Houston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, and others. The severe weather, including thunderstorms and strong winds, is the main cause of these massive delays and cancellations. With Delta, American Airlines, and United leading the list of affected airlines, passengers are struggling to rebook or find alternate flights.
Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles have become key hotspots, with thousands of travelers scrambling for solutions. As the storm system continues to impact the region, it’s uncertain when operations will fully return to normal, leaving many passengers facing long waits and frustration at major airports.
The latest data shows that the severe weather has caused massive disruptions across US airports. In total, 4,327 flights have been delayed, and 602 flights have been cancelled within, into, or out of the United States. These numbers highlight the scale of the storm’s impact, affecting airports from coast to coast and leaving thousands of travelers in limbo.
Flight operations at various airports, including ASE, MCO, MIA, RSW, and SAN, are being severely impacted due to the ongoing storms.
At ASE, the storms are causing ground delays, with an average delay of 33 minutes due to high airport volume. Other airports, like MCO, MIA, RSW, and SAN, are also reporting departure delays, averaging 15 to 30 minutes, and these delays are expected to continue increasing as the storms move through the region. The ongoing weather system is causing increased volume of departures and compacted demand at these airports, exacerbating delays.
The primary cause of these disruptions is a severe storm system that has been moving across the central United States. Thunderstorms with powerful wind gusts, large hail, and tornadoes have been shifting through Texas, Oklahoma, and surrounding areas. Meteorologists are warning that the risk of nighttime tornadoes, which can be especially dangerous, will persist into the coming days.
These winds add extra energy to the already potent thunderstorms, contributing to even more dangerous weather conditions. This storm system is expected to last through the weekend, impacting travel with ground stops likely to be implemented at various departure and arrival airports as the danger approaches.
Passengers flying to, from, or through airports in Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, and the Carolinas can expect ongoing disruptions due to thunderstorms, heavy rain, and possible flooding. While some thunderstorms are expected to be less severe between Sunday and Monday, the threat of severe weather is set to return by Tuesday and Wednesday, when the storm system is expected to intensify again.
Passengers flying through Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta airports are particularly vulnerable to cancellations and delays due to this widespread severe weather event. Tornado risks, strong winds, and rain-induced flooding are likely to lead to further interruptions and delays. Airlines and airports are likely to continue to issue weather-related advisories and ground delays as conditions evolve.
Among the hardest-hit airports are those in Atlanta, Houston, and Dallas, where flight operations have been severely delayed or cancelled. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), in particular, has experienced substantial flight delays, affecting both domestic and international passengers. Similarly, Houston Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and Dallas-Fort Worth International (DFW) airports have faced significant disruptions, with hundreds of flights affected.
Miami International (MIA) and Los Angeles International (LAX) also struggled with considerable disruptions, resulting in 156 delays at MIA and 191 delays at LAX. With bad weather hitting airports from New York to Miami, the ongoing storm chaos is expected to worsen before it gets better, with passengers urged to stay updated on their flight statuses.
Several major US airlines, including American Airlines, Delta, Spirit, United, and Southwest Airlines, are managing the bulk of cancellations and delays. The disruptions have caused a ripple effect throughout airline operations, with passengers finding it increasingly difficult to secure alternate flights or reschedule their trips.

For those impacted by these delays and cancellations, here are the steps passengers can take:
Although the worst of the storm is expected to subside in the next few days, the lingering effects of these disruptions will continue to impact travel. It may take several days for airlines to work through the backlog of cancellations and delays, especially as airports continue to experience the ripple effects of weather-related disruptions. Passengers who are scheduled to fly in the coming days should be prepared for potential delays and cancellations. It is advised to stay informed through airline communications and airport announcements for updates on flight statuses. With over 4,327 delays and 602 cancellations today, air travel in the US remains in a state of flux, and passengers are urged to stay patient and plan accordingly. (FlightAware)
