Nigeria’s reigning African champions, the Super Falcons, are eager to bounce back after a late defeat to Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses in the first of two pre-WAFCON friendly matches in Yaoundé on Saturday.
The two sides are set to clash again on Tuesday at Yaoundé’s Military Stadium, concluding a two-match series arranged by both nations’ football federations to prepare for this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals.
The Lionesses, drawn in Group D with Ghana, Mali, and Cape Verde for the tournament in Morocco, secured a last-minute victory at the Military Stadium.
Yvana Mbomezomo’s extra-time strike from outside the box beat debutant goalkeeper Comfort Erhabor, providing the only goal of the match. Despite the defeat, Erhabor displayed composure and confidence in her first outing for Nigeria.
Second-half substitutes Joy Omewa, Precious Christopher, Folashade Ijamilusi, Esther Onyenezide, and Michelle Alozie attempted to exert more pressure, but Lionesses goalkeeper Ange Bawou was in superb form, proving a formidable barrier against the Super Falcons.
Coach Justin Madugu is expected to alter his tactics and potentially his starting line-up for Tuesday’s encounter. The Falcons, who famously defeated the Lionesses 1-0 in front of their home crowd in the 2016 Women’s AFCON Final, will undoubtedly be pushing for a win.
Africa’s top goalkeeper for the past two years, Chiamaka Nnadozie, may feature, with Alozie likely to start alongside Oluwatosin Demehin, Osinachi Ohale, and Glory Ogbonna in defence. Onyenezide, Christopher, Ucheibe, Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene, and Jennifer Echegini remain midfield options. Upfront, Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Gift Monday, Rinsola Babajide, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Ijamilusi are available to Madugu. (LEADERSHIP)
