The Cross River State Police Command has issued a clarification regarding the incident involving police operatives at Utuhu Junction in Obanliku Local Government Area, stating that the operation was part of an attempt to arrest suspects linked to an alleged case of assault occasioning harm.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the command said the operation followed a complaint filed by Elizabeth Akinya, who reported being assaulted. The suspects named in connection with the case include Peter Odey, also known as “Ola,” Michael Ashaba, and others.
The police dismissed reports circulating online that the incident was connected to unlawful gambling, describing such claims as inaccurate.
According to the command, the incident occurred on February 9, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m., when the suspects allegedly resisted arrest and mobilised youths who attacked the police team.
During the confrontation, the assailants reportedly overpowered the officers and seized two assault rifles, creating what the police described as a serious threat to public safety.
The command further disclosed that in the process of attempting to prevent the suspects from escaping with the weapons and to recover the firearms, Peter Odey sustained a gunshot injury and was immediately taken to Sacred Heart Hospital, Obudu, for treatment. Three police officers injured during the attack were also taken to the General Hospital in Sankwala.
The police said the situation was later brought under control with the assistance of military tactical teams, community leaders, and government authorities. The two rifles and the patrol vehicle taken during the incident were subsequently recovered, and calm was restored in the area.
The command confirmed that an internal investigation into the incident has commenced, stressing that police personnel found culpable would be held accountable.
It urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and allow due process to take its course, assuring that further updates would be provided as investigations continue. (Guardian)
