The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has raised the alarm over the penchant for overspeeding by the convoys of Nigeria’s Very Important Persons (VIPs).

The commission in a communique issued yesterday at the end of one-day sensitisation forum with stakeholders on speed limit device enforcement held in Kaduna, North-West Nigeria, said it would make a strong case to relevant authorities for the sanctioning of erring VIP convoys.

FRSC in the communiqué signed by Kaduna Sector Commander Olumike Olagunju said enforcement of speed limit devices should be accompanied by aggressive and continuous public enlightenment of all stakeholders including passengers.

The forum unanimously observed the critical need to introduce and enforce the use of speed limiting devices for all vehicles plying Nigerian roads.

Part of the recommendations suggested that necessary legislation and/or policies should be enacted by relevant organs of government at all levels to provide the legal backing for the scheme. Such laws, according to the communique, “should be universally applied to all Nigerians without discrimination on the basis of social standing.

“Driving instructions in the form of adequate training and retraining of all categories of drivers should be emphasised as prelude to the enforcement of speed limiting devices.”
