Officer Mohammad
A police officer serving with the Borno State Police Command, Mohammad Muhammad, has returned N2.6 million that was mistakenly credited to his bank account.
The state police spokesperson, Nahum Daso, confirmed the development on Monday and commended the officer for what he described as an exceptional display of honesty.
Daso, while sharing a post by Bello Jafar on Facebook, praised Muhammad for choosing to return the funds instead of keeping them.
“I would like to formally express my appreciation for Mohammad Alhaji Muhammad, a loyal customer of United Bank for Africa (UBA) and a police officer of exceptional integrity,” the post read.
Jafar said the officer’s action showed a rare level of integrity and personal discipline.
“His conduct reflects the true values expected of a police officer and serves as an example worthy of recognition and commendation,” he said.
He added that such actions help to build confidence in public institutions.
“Acts like this strengthen public trust and highlight the importance of integrity in both professional and personal life,” Jafar said.
Providing details of the incident, Daso explained that the accidental transfer occurred at about 6pm on Thursday.
“The officer saw the money and was surprised because he was not expecting that money,” he said.
According to him, Muhammad immediately contacted his account manager after receiving the alert.
“So he reached out to his account manager who asked him to go to the bank. When he got to the bank he was asked to fill a form for the reversal,” Daso added.
He said officials of the bank expressed surprise at the officer’s decision, noting that similar cases often turn out differently.
“The bank officials expressed surprise because what they usually experience in such cases is that the recipients will use the money for their own personal gain,” Daso said.
He added that the action of the officer clearly demonstrated professionalism and integrity. (Vanguard, excluding headline)
