Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona
Joan Laporta has stepped down as president of FC Barcelona, submitting his resignation during Monday’s board meeting in accordance with the club’s constitution.
The move is a procedural step, aimed at complying with election rules and preparing for the upcoming vote on March 15.
Laporta intends to seek another term as president and will compete against Víctor Font, Xavi Vilajoana, Marc Ciria, and one other candidate.
His resignation allows him to run without the advantages of incumbency, in line with Barcelona’s regulations designed to ensure fair elections.
Temporary Committee to Manage Daily Operations
Following Laporta’s resignation, the club’s day-to-day operations will be overseen by a temporary committee. Rafa Yuste, a close ally of Laporta and sporting vice-president since 2021, will lead the group during the transitional period.
Board Members Step Down
Several board members also resigned alongside Laporta, including Elena Fort (Vice President for Institutional Affairs), Antonio Escudero (Vice President for Social Affairs), Treasurer Ferran Olivé, and directors Josep Maria Albert, Xavier Barbany, Miquel Camps, Aureli Mas, Xavier Puig, and Joan Soler I Ferré.
Laporta, who returned to the club presidency in March 2021, will now focus entirely on campaigning for re-election. His decision reflects a standard practice in Barcelona’s political system, ensuring sitting presidents do not leverage their office during the election process.
The election on March 15 will determine whether Laporta secures another term or if a new candidate will take over Barcelona’s top post. (BusinessDay)
