South Africa has reportedly emerged as the new host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations following claims that Morocco has withdrawn from staging the tournament.
The announcement was made on Sunday night by South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, during the Super League Awards ceremony in Johannesburg.
The 2026 WAFCON, which also serves as a qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, is scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
According to Mabe, South Africa will step in to host Africa’s flagship women’s football competition after Morocco’s reported decision to relinquish the hosting rights.
“Tonight, I would like to announce that South Africa will be hosting the 2026 WAFCON, which we all know is a qualifying tournament for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil,” Mabe said.
If confirmed, South Africa would be operating within a tight preparation window, with the expanded 16 team tournament expected to be staged under a compressed calendar.
However, there has been no official confirmation from the Confederation of African Football regarding a change in host nation. Morocco has also not confirmed that it has withdrawn, and no formal communication has been issued by the Moroccan Football Federation.
Speculation surrounding Morocco’s reported withdrawal has been linked to political considerations or lingering tensions following the controversial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal, though these claims remain unverified. (Arise News)
