Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, confirmed the incident, which occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge, Adekunle corridor, inward Iyana-Oworonsoki, involved a painted Volkswagen commercial bus (KRD 436 XF).
The Governor’s aide disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that the fully loaded commercial bus was also carrying several household effects as at the time of the incident.
According to him, the vehicle suffered break failure, as a result of which the driver lost control of the vehicle, culminating in the bus capsizing onto its flank.
“Six passengers comprising two adult males and four adult females sustaining serious bodily injuries, while one passenger suffered a critical ocular injury at the instant of impact.
“Personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who were actively deployed on routine surveillance duties within the affected corridor, responded. Through a well-coordinated emergency response, all six critically injured victims were successfully extricated from the wreckage.
“Four of the injured passengers were moved to an undisclosed medical facility for urgent treatment. Officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Adekunle Division, rendered crucial assistance by conveying one male victim who sustained multiple fractures to a hospital for intensive medical care,” he added.
This will not be the first time the bridge has witnessed a crash.
In a similar incident on December 9, 2025, two people lost their lives, and several others sustained critical injuries in multiple crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Third Mainland Bridge.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and emergency responders worked to control the traffic and clear wreckage from the roads.
In another incident on July 7, 2025, several passengers were injured in a commercial bus crash before Adekunle Junction, Inward Lagos Island. However, no live was lost in the incident.
The frequency of these accidents raises concerns about road safety and emergency response.
The Lagos State Government has urged commercial transport operators to ensure regular mechanical checks, particularly of braking systems, before embarking on journeys to prevent such incidents. (Daily Trust)
