Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman
Turkish giants Fenerbahce are closing in on a major January signing, with negotiations to sign Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman from Atalanta now at an advanced stage, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Talks between the two clubs have intensified in recent days, with an agreement edging closer on a deal valued at around €40 million. Atalanta are understood to be holding out for a €35m upfront fee plus a further €5m in performance-related add-ons.
Following a fresh round of discussions, both sides are reportedly confident that a full agreement can be reached before the transfer window closes. Outstanding details include the structure of payments and the provision of bank guarantees, which are key to finalising the move.
Fenerbahce sporting director Devin Özek has travelled to Italy to conclude negotiations, underlining the club’s determination to seal the transfer swiftly.
Lookman has emerged as a priority target for Fenerbahce as they seek to bolster their attacking options and mount a strong domestic and European challenge. If completed, the transfer would be one of the most significant deals of the January window and a major statement of intent from the Istanbul club.
The Nigerian international had pushed for an exit from Atalanta last summer after accusing the club of “broken promises” and refusing to play. Inter Milan saw multiple bids rejected, prompting Lookman to issue a public statement expressing his frustration.
After mixed spells in the Premier League earlier in his career, Lookman has flourished in Italy, becoming a key figure at Atalanta and winning the African Player of the Year award in 2024. (BusinessDay)
