The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ebonyi State has disclosed that it arrested a total of 800 persons for various offences last year.
Public Relations Officer of the corps, Emmanuella Ibeneme, stated this in a statement issued in Abakaliki, the state capital.
She said the corps recorded notable achievements in crime prevention, detection and prosecution, contributing significantly to the maintenance of law and order in the state.
She revealed that the arrested suspects comprised 520 males and 280 females.
Ibeneme said the suspects committed various offences, including vandalism, stealing, attempted murder, domestic violence, child trafficking, illegal possession of human heads, threat to life, illegal mining and defamation.
“A total of 800 suspects were arrested in connection with 595 cases. The arrested suspects comprised 520 males and 280 females, reflecting effective intelligence gathering and operational coverage across different crime categories.
“The crimes investigated during the year centred on vandalism, stealing, attempted murder, domestic violence, child trafficking, illegal possession of human heads, threat to life, illegal mining and defamation.
“Among these, vandalism and stealing emerged as the most prevalent offences, particularly involving public infrastructure and construction materials. Proactive policing strategies and targeted patrols helped to curb the spread of these crimes.
“Investigation and prosecution: All cases handled within the year were thoroughly investigated, with sufficient evidence gathered to support prosecution. Consequently, all suspects were duly charged to court, demonstrating professionalism, diligence and commitment to due process and justice.
“The command recorded substantial recoveries during various operations, including six (6) motorcycles, over 50 bags of adulterated fertiliser, large quantities of iron rods of various sizes, 86 bags of cement stolen from a road construction site, and ten (10) mobile phones of various makes.
“These recoveries not only strengthened prosecution cases but also helped in safeguarding government and private assets,” she said. (The Sun)
