Slashed face of Iwasen Terhemba
In Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State, a 17-year-old girl now bears permanent scars on her face—marks that tell a story of rejection, intimidation, and alleged violence, leaving her family living in fear and pleading for justice.
Iwasen Terhemba, a teenager under the care of her guardian, Jemila Savalla Wanga, was allegedly attacked with a razor blade in her own home, an assault that has left her with serious facial injuries and deep emotional trauma.
The incident, which occurred last weekend, has sparked outrage in the community, particularly over the alleged failure of law enforcement agencies, especially the police, to apprehend the perpetrator, who reportedly remains at large.
According to the family, Iwasen had for some time been the target of persistent advances from a married man identified as Mr Abbas. Despite her repeated refusals, grounded in the fact that she is underage and the man is married, the alleged harassment continued unabated.
The situation reportedly worsened when Mr Abbas’ wife, Ramatu Abbas, became aware of her husband’s alleged involvement with the minor. Instead of confronting her husband, she allegedly directed her anger at the teenager, subjecting her to insults and threats.
In an attempt to prevent further tension and protect the young girl, her guardian approached Mrs Abbas with the victim, explaining that it was her husband who had been harassing the minor and allegedly attempted to rape her. She urged the woman to caution her husband and allow peace to return.
What was intended as a peaceful intervention allegedly escalated into violence. Sources claim that Mrs Abbas later went to the girl’s residence and attacked her with a razor blade, slashing her face and leaving visible injuries that have since required medical attention.
The scars, according to those close to the family, are a painful reminder of a moment that changed the teenager’s life.
Speaking with The Guardian by telephone, the guardian urged the relevant authorities to act urgently, citing incessant threats against her and her children.
She, who said her husband passed away a few months ago, expressed sadness over the mutilation of her ward’s face while still mourning her late husband. She also called on the state governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, and well-meaning individuals and organisations to assist in treating the victim, who, she said, has been in severe pain. (The Guardian)
