The Nigeria Boxing Federation will conduct open trials in February to select boxers for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, says the federation.
The trials will be open to pugilists across all weight categories, while the date and venue will be communicated once arrangements are finalised.
NBF Vice-President, Omonlei Imadu, disclosed this on Monday in Lagos in a statement made available to journalists.
Imadu said the selection process would be transparent and credible, with equal opportunities for all boxers to prove their readiness.
“I make bold to say the days of impunity in boxers’ selection are over. Every athlete will have a fair chance,” he said.
He added that the current NBF board was committed to changing boxing’s trajectory through credibility and professionalism.
Imadu urged boxers to intensify preparations and remain on high alert ahead of the screening exercise.
“Our aim is to select boxers with the skills and mentality to bring glory to the nation,” he stated.
He also called on coaches to ensure their pugilists were in perfect condition before the trials.
The 23rd Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to Aug. 2. (NAN)
