By PAMELA, EBOH, Awka
Anambra State Police Command has announced the arrest of a 26-year-old Chibuike Valentine Anikpe over the killing of his girlfriend, 35-year-old single mother, Ogechukwu Mmadubugwu who was living at Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government Area of the state over issue of infidelity.
Confirming the incident in a statement made available to journalists in Awka on Sunday, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said that the suspect was arrested by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, on 7 January 2026 in connection with the crime.
He however debunked reports circulating on social media claiming that the killing was committed by individuals to whom the suspect was indebted to, describing such claims as false, misleading, and unfounded.
Ikenga urged members of the public to disregard such claims, saying that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to stabbing the victim in the neck with a knife, which resulted in her death.
While saying that the incident occurred at about 12:00 midnight on 9 December 2025, the Police spokesman added, “The suspect, in his confession, stated that the act was committed due to suspicions of infidelity.
“He further revealed that he became emotionally distressed after going bankrupt and accumulating debts while attempting to establish a business for the victim, a situation that allegedly escalated into a fatal confrontation.
“He also admitted to dropping a fake letter claiming that he had been kidnapped by individuals he owed money, in an attempt to mislead investigators and facilitate his escape from the crime scene.”
Ikenga further revealed that in the course of the ongoing investigative procedures, detectives have visited the mortuary where the deceased’s body was deposited, noting that the tragic incident has sparked public outrage and renewed discussions on domestic violence and relationship-related crimes within the community.
He urged members of the public to adopt lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes and to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent avoidable tragedies.
The Police Spokesman also said that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
