The Kano State Police Command has impounded 104 commercial motorcycles and 68 tricycles with the arrest of 172 suspects for violating the state’s ban on commercial motorcycle operations and restrictions on tricycle movements within the Kano metropolis.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Spokesperson of the Command, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the enforcement exercise was carried out in collaboration with other security agencies between January 1 and 7, 2026.
He said the suspects were arrested for flouting the ban on passenger conveyance by motorcycles (popularly known as Achaba or Okada) and the restriction on tricycle operations between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00a.m, adding that all the suspects have been charged to court for prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Bakori, commended residents of the state for their cooperation and understanding, noting that public support was critical to the success of the enforcement exercise. He also praised the combined security agencies involved in the operation, particularly the Kano Road and Traffic Agency (KAROTA), for their commitment to enforcing the regulations.
The police reiterated that the ban and restriction remain in force across affected local government areas, including Kano Municipal, Gwale, Dala, Fagge, Nassarawa, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo (Jido area), and parts of Dawakin Kudu, namely Tamburawa, Gurjiya and Jido wards.
Residents were urged to comply strictly with the regulations and to report violations or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines: 08032419754, 08123821575 and 09029292926.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and sustaining measures aimed at enhancing public safety and security across Kano State. (Leadership)
