FCT plans informal markets to stop street hawking

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Muhammad Bello, says he will create informal markets in Abuja to eliminate street hawking from the city.

According to him, the creation of such informal markets would complement the efforts of the special task force he inaugurated earlier in the year to rid the city of street hawkers and beggars.

The special task force comprises the Police, the Army and other paramilitary agencies.

The chairman of the special task force had told Channels Television in September that those who import beggars from neighbouring states have made it difficult for the task force to succeed in eradicating street hawking in Abuja.

Meanwhile Abuja residents have been reacting differently to the decisions of the Minister.

While some applaud the activities of the special task force, others say the informal markets should have been created before the enforcement begins.

Street hawking has continued to thrive in Abuja despite the various efforts of past administrations to eradicate it. (Channels TV)
