Ayo Teriba, renowned economist
Economist Ayo Teriba has urged the Nigerian government to focus on earning revenue from the country’s assets rather than selling them off.
Speaking during an interview with ARISE NEWS on Friday, regarding recommendations for 2026, Teriba highlighted that nations and companies around the world generate wealth by leveraging assets without relinquishing ownership and Nigeria should do the same.
“What I am advocating is that we should earn money from our assets. Don’t sell them,” he said, pointing to examples such as the Burj Khalifa, which earns billions in tourism revenue, and Saudi Aramco, which remains government-owned despite being listed on the stock market.
He also cited Dangote’s refinery, noting that it is being brought to the market to securitise the asset, not to sell it.
Teriba criticised the government’s approach of relying on taxation and debt, arguing that more sustainable revenue could come from effectively monetising assets like NNPC. “You shouldn’t be taxing people just for giving NNPC 4 trillion or 5 trillion in debt. You want to come and tax people for what? Make money from your assets. Do not sell them.” he stated. (AriseNews TV)
