Vice President Shettima speaks during his visit to Borno
Vice President Kashim Shettima during the visit to survivors of the bomb explosion at Gamboru Market in Maiduguri, on Wednesday, receiving treatment at the Muhammadu Buhari Trauma Centre at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, described the explosion as “senseless violence” declared that the terrorism menace will soon end.
In a statement by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, toured the wards at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, pledged an unyielding federal push to eradicate insecurity nationwide.
“We are here on behalf of the President to sympathise with the victims and to reassure the good people of Borno State and indeed the entire nation, that the government remains unwavering in its commitment to secure the lives and property of our citizens,” the Vice President said.
He added: “By the grace of God, this madness will soon be brought to an end.”
The Gamboru blast – the latest in a string of low-level insurgent strikes – claimed at least one life immediately and injured dozens, exposing vulnerabilities in a region long battered by a 16-year insurgency.
Hospital Chief Medical Director had earlier briefed Shettima that 14 patients were rushed in post-explosion; seven remain hospitalized, including one fighting for life in intensive care, while five have been discharged.
Shettima heaped praise on Governor of Borno Babagana Zulum, whose tireless humanitarian push has rebuilt schools and markets from insurgency’s ashes. “The Governor of Borno has been working round the clock to complement the efforts of the Federal Government. I sincerely appreciate his commitment,” the VP noted.
“Most importantly, we are united in victory as well as in challenges. We are one nation, tied to a common destiny,” he added. (The Sun)
