FCT Police Commissioner Dantawaye says charge sheets are ready as police intensify security operations and community engagement.

The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, Miller Dantawaye, has said that at least 11 suspects are currently in custody over the killing of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, with charge sheets already prepared and arraignment expected soon.

Speaking in an interview with ARISE News on Wednesday, Dantawaye said investigations into the high-profile case were nearing completion.

“As of today, to the glory of God, at least 11 suspects are in custody. The charge sheets are ready, and they will be arraigned within the nearest possible time,” he said.

He explained that the number of suspects was refined as investigations progressed.

“During investigation, you could find out if A is actually really involved or not. So we have 11 in custody. The charge sheet is ready, and they will soon be arraigned. Almost immediately after the new year, they’ll be in court.”

Dantawaye also reassured residents that the FCT Police Command has intensified security operations to ensure a peaceful Yuletide season.

“FCT and its citizens must enjoy the Yuletide period. That is our take. We are doing whatever we can to ensure that happens,” he said.

He disclosed that he personally visited communities including Kawu and Gaba, meeting with traditional rulers to boost public confidence.

“We went there to build their confidence, to let them free their minds completely towards enjoying the festive period,” he said, noting that crime had significantly reduced in areas with sustained police presence.

The police commissioner said the command has made major progress against notorious “one-chance” robbery syndicates operating within Abuja.

“As we speak, we have at least six different syndicates of one-chance perpetrators in custody,” Dantawaye revealed.

He attributed the success to sustained patrols, intensive supervision, and targeted training.

“I personally go out as early as 4 a.m. to ensure our teams are on ground. Supervision matters a great lot,” he said.

“That has gone a long way in assisting us towards apprehending a lot of one-chance people, either in the act or after committing the act.”

According to him, suspects were recently arrested in Apo and Kubwa while attempting vehicle robberies.

“Two different groups were apprehended, and that is because our men are out on patrols. Our pin-down points are very active.”

While acknowledging limitations in citywide surveillance infrastructure, Dantawaye said technology still plays a role in investigations.

“We may not have CCTV cameras everywhere, but some locations are still active. Once crime is committed, we dig from known to unknown, and sometimes we leverage on technology to apprehend suspects,” he explained.

Dantawaye emphasised that community engagement remains central to his policing philosophy, in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

“Community policing is very, very important. There is strong synergy today between the Nigeria Police Force in the FCT and community members, vigilantes, and traditional rulers,” he said.

He detailed ongoing engagements across the territory.

“I’ve met with traditional rulers, estate associations, market women, and border communities. We listen to their concerns and address what we can immediately,” he added.

Dantawaye assured residents that security operations would continue beyond the festive season.

“All hands are on deck today and beyond today, up till the new year. Residents should enjoy themselves, attend their church services, and know that we are on the road to secure them.” (ARISE NEWS)
