The Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) has approved the promotion of 2,363 civil servants to directorate-level positions across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

Of the total, 338 were elevated to SGL 17 as full directors, 614 to SGL 16 as deputy directors, and 1,411 to SGL 15 as assistant directors.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, in a statement by the FCSC Chairman, Professor Tunji Olaopa.

Professor Olaopa noted that the promotion process marked a significant milestone for the civil service, as it involved competitive computer-based testing (CBT) for the first time in the commission’s history.

“Candidates underwent rigorous oral interviews for the director cadre following the computer-based examinations,” he said.

The candidates came from a wide range of MDAs, including the State House, Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, Agriculture, Communication, Environment, Health, Housing, Humanitarian Affairs, Industry, Trade and Investment, Information, Science & Technology, Justice, Labour and Employment, Livestock, Marine, Transport, Power, Water Resources, Women Affairs, Works, Youth Development, Defence, Foreign Affairs, Regional Development, Solid Minerals, Steel Development, Sports Commission, Office of the Accountant General, Office of the Auditor General, and the Office of the Surveyor General.

Professor Olaopa highlighted that the Office of the Head of Service produced the highest number of successful directors at 110, while ministries such as Aviation, Transport, Power, Education, Petroleum, and Solid Minerals recorded no promotions at the director level.

The examinations were conducted in collaboration with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) both within Nigeria and overseas.

Overseas centres included the United Kingdom, the United States, India, and Egypt.

The FCSC stated that the use of computer-based testing and international examination centres represents a move towards modernising the civil service promotion system and ensuring broader access and transparency. (The Guardian)
