Students, unions protest alleged fraud at Federal Poly Ado-Ekiti, paralyse academic activities

Academic activities were on Tuesday paralysed at the Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti as students and three major unions in the institution embarked on a peaceful protest.

The protest was organised by the Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Polytechnics (ASSUP), Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics against short payment of staff and bad management of the institution.

The protest, which saw students carrying placards with different inscriptions calling for the removal of the Rector, commenced at about 8:00am this morning.

The protesters accused the Rector, Taiwo Akande for budget padding, co-operative deduction of several millions of naira.

They shut the entrance of the school, disallowing students and staff from gaining access to the school.

Representatives of the protesting groups told journalists on campus that the administration of the Rector had witnessed massive fraud and the school’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) had not been properly expended.

The protesters called on all anti-graft agencies in the country to investigate the administration of the Rector.

Efforts to speak with the embattled Rector, Dr Taiwo Theresa Akande, were not successful.

However, the Public Relations Officer of the Institution, Mr Ade Adejolu, in a telephone interview said that the institution was not willing to comment on the matter. (Channels TV)
