The excitement is building as the best of African football gather in Morocco for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that kicks off on December 21.
The host nation is pulling out all the stops to deliver an unforgettable tournament, with dazzling displays on exhibition as 24 participating nations fine-tune preparations.
Daily Trust AFCON preview series runs through each group to showcase the nations and their talented players vying for the coveted trophy.
Group B Nations: Nigeria, Tunisia, Uganda, Tanzania
Team to beat: Tunisia. The Carthage Eagles are one of the dark horses in Morocco. They waltzed through the 2026 World Cup qualification with an unbeaten record in 10 matches, and conceded no goals. The team is a mix of exciting youngsters and experienced veterans, without a standout player.
This could be the trick in Sami Trabelsi’s arsenal for a successful AFCON tournament.
Whipping Nation: Tanzania. If resilience and determination win titles, the Taifa Stars would be up among the best. However, the overall team outlook does not look good for the CECAFA nation, and a tough group that includes Tunisia and Nigeria means Tanzania should travel light to Morocco.
Surprise performer: Nigeria. it would be a surprise if the Super Eagles top the group despite the various challenges facing the team. The goals of Victor Osimhen could come in handy, supported by a reborn defence and rejuvenated midfield.
Players to watch:
Victor Osimhen is the player to watch at AFCON 2025, and he will be expected to carry the weight of Nigeria’s dreams. Tunisia’s Ellyes Skhiri will shield the defence for more clean sheets, and Hannibal Mejbri should provide creativity. Uganda on-form Rogers Mato will carry the Cranes’ goals threat, while Mbwana Samatta will be expected to provide both goals and leadership for Tanzania.
Key match: Nigeria vs Tunisia. A stingy defence will come up against an attack led by the free-scoring Osimhen. It is expected to be a blockbuster showpiece that could determine the winner of the group.
Group Predictions: Tunisia and Nigeria are expected to progress from Group C, with Tunisia’s form putting the North African side at the top ahead of troubled Super Eagles. (Daily Trust)
